In January 2001, Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes e. V. became the largest German department for foreign cultural policy mediation.
Created from the merger between Goethe-Institut (established in 1951) and Inter Nationes (established in 1952), this new institute is the official department for the diffusion and promotion of the German language and culture throughout the world. By appointment of the German Federal Republic, its 128 institutes, located in 76 countries, handle the creation of cultural programmes, the organisation of language courses, the support of teachers, universities and other departments in promoting the German language and distributing information on current affairs in Germany, while the 15 institutes within Germany organise language courses based upon the most modern methods and attended by approximately 25,000 foreigners every year. Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes also offers a wide range of cultural mediation programmes, international cultural magazines, books, informative material about Germany, documentary films and a differentiated on-line service accessible all over the world. A special programme enables travel by over 1,500 multipliers a year from the press, media and cultural sectors to Germany for a qualified informative trip.
The work of Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes in Italy aims to deepen understanding between Italy and Germany and to eliminate prejudice and stimulate awareness with regard to cultural and social questions during the European unification process.
Key points in the events organised by the Cultural Programmes Section are the meeting between Italians and Germans, the empowering of a network of multipliers in both countries, mediation of contacts between experts and cultural information, as well as the organisation of cultural and artistic projects in areas of relevance with Italian and German partners.
The linguistic section offers a programme of language courses and rather differentiated exams. As part of the Educational Consulting activity, seminars and a range of services are offered, mainly aimed at Italian teachers teaching German. The Institutes support national and European language projects, as well as linguistic policy projects in co-operation with Italian partners.
The Information Centre - Library carries information on current aspects of cultural, social and political life in Germany. It places a wealth of books and other media at the disposal of those interested in Germany or who wish to learn or teach German. It has contact and co-operates with other libraries, both Italian and German, and organises projects for library promotion.
All the cultural events are open to the public and free of charge, unless otherwise indicated. The programmes are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.
Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes Rom co-ordinates the activities of the Italian branches of Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes and handles relations with Albania and Malta.
